After his active career, Bittencourt devoted himself to training. In May 2005 he became head coach at his former club Corinthians São Paulo . He succeeded the hapless Argentine Daniel Passarella , to whom he was previously available as an assistant coach. Bittencourt led the team back to winning ways and lost only four out of twenty games. Despite this success, he had to vacate his post for his compatriot Antônio Lopes in September of the same year .
